Leadership Series

The Ekya Leadership is a free monthly forum that aims to cultivate future leadership both domestically and abroad by connecting experienced changemakers with aspiring youth. Leadership series events are open to anyone that is interested. The Leadership Series' topics will vary widely in scope and delivery. One month may be a presentation on US development, and the next may be a study in South Asian History.

Mrs. Kate Maehr is the executive director of The Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 600 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 500,000 adults and children every year. Last year, the Food Depository distributed more than 46 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of more than 95,000 meals every day.

Maehr, 38, has been with the Greater Chicago Food Depository for more than a decade, first as the director of individual giving for three years and in her current role since 1999. As director of individual giving, Kate significantly expanded the organization’s outreach efforts, leading to a more than 50 percent increase in individual revenue. As director of development, Kate led the Food Depository’s recent capital campaign, a four-year, $30 million effort launched in October 2001 in support of the Food Depository’s new food bank and training center. The 268,000-square-foot facility doubled the food bank’s ability to distribute food to hungry men, women and children throughout Cook County and also houses innovative programs that work to break the cycle of poverty. Maehr’s civic leadership and efforts on behalf of the Chicago area’s less fortunate have earned her recognition as one of Chicago’s “40 under 40” to watch by Crain’s Chicago Business and as a graduate of a prestigious Leadership Greater Chicago class. She also is a sought after leader and speaker among food banks nationwide through the America’s Second Harvest food bank network.
